Wavefront is Canada’s Centre of Excellence for Wireless Commercialization and Research, accelerating the growth and success of wireless companies by connecting them with critical resources, partners and opportunities, to drive economic and social benefits for Canada. With a comprehensive suite of accelerated commercialization and mentorship programs, international market linkages, state of the art wireless product development and testing infrastructure, and wireless training programs and events, Wavefront enables Canadian firms to leverage mobile technology.

Unique Partnership

CENGN and Wavefront are collaborating to seize the opportunity of the rapidly growing technology industry in Canada by sharing knowledge, expertise and resources to bring new technologies to market faster. Between the two National Centres of Excellence (NCEs), they have an established presence in every one of Canada’s central technology hubs, including Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal.

Accelerating the commercialization of Canada’s best companies is a key part of CENGN’s mandate. CENGN and its members technically and financially support their projects to commercialize promising technology. In an effort to identify the innovative companies that may benefit from this game-changing support, CENGN went on a Cross-Canada Roadshow in January 2015. Over the course of our collaborative promotion of the event, Wavefront introduced us to a Vancouver-based company, Expeto.

Expeto provides all of the necessary elements needed in order to deploy an LTE core network in the cloud. With Expeto’s solutions, the days of vendor lock-in and overbuilt networks are gone. Deployments in the new world order of NFV means
service providers can deploy what they need, when they need it. COTS environments can also be taken advantage of in order to remain completely competitive in the new reality of OTT service deployments.

“CENGN is providing us with the ability to showcase our technology on a world stage,” says Ryley Mackenzie, CEO of Expeto. “The opportunity to run a live demonstration for potential customers could prove to be a game-changer for Expeto.”

In October 2015, Wavefront is partnering with CENGN to showcase Expeto’s on-demand, NFV-based vEPC product at the SDN & OpenFlow World Congress in Dusseldorf, Germany. This proof-of-concept (PoC) will demonstrate a revolutionary method for rapidly deploying and managing an end-to-end LTE network. This will include the dynamic deployment/enablement of hardware, software and associated SDN/NFV elements. For the purpose of the demo, the vEPC, vIMS and Juniper Contrail will run in the CENGN lab, while the Small cell/eNB will be located at the show. The demo will consist of three different use cases: the fast deployment of a vEPC environment with a single software package in seconds; voice/video calls with phones connected to the Small cell LTE network at the show; and quick emergency recovery of voice/video calls when the Traditional Mobile Network Infrastructure is down. The demonstration at the SDN & OpenFlow World Congress will enable Expeto to showcase their solution in a live network to an international audience.

“When our members, world leaders in communications, validate that a company has something, we listen and fast track commercialization. In this case, we provided Expeto with a proof-of-concept and a showcase for potential customers,” says Ritch Dusome, CENGN CEO.
