Get Ready for Smart Cities

Published: June 13th, 2017

Innovations in next generation networking (NGN) infrastructure are opening the door for Ontario smart cities. Open programmable infrastructures controlled by software defined networking (SDN) offer a powerful alternative to service providers and businesses building their own private infrastructure. The current system of community IT infrastructure is built on private SDN frameworks making services expensive, energy inefficient, and non-scalable.

With the approaching integration of 5G, cities need more agile and flexible infrastructures that can sustain rigorous network requirements. By creating a universal, open infrastructure for all cities and businesses, we can revolutionize the management of communication and information flow for schools, transportation systems, hospitals, power, and other community services.
CENGN, Juniper Networks, and Inocybe Technologies are all addressing Ontario’s need for new, scalable infrastructure like Juniper’s OpenContrail and Inocybe’s OpenDaylight, which will enable a national, standardized SDN smart city framework.

CENGN strives to propel the next generation of technology in ICT and IoT by helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with innovative solutions to commercialize their products and contribute to the growing open source community. CENGN also believes in uniting the powers of academia, industry and government to make Canada a leader in the ICT industry.

The future of smart cities is quickly approaching! With the Ontario Government’s allocation of $63.3 million to CENGN from their annual budget, IoT and Smart City technology will be innovating faster than ever. Make sure you’re up to date with all of the latest technology by following NCE’s Innovation Impacts blog where they talk about how new network infrastructure is making cities smarter. Oh!
