Potential Project Types at the Advanced Manufacturing Living Lab
The Advanced Manufacturing Living Lab supports industrial IoT, advanced indoor positioning testing, and smart manufacturing applications. Validate IoT sensor accuracy and resilience on real industrial equipment. Benchmark indoor positioning technologies side-by-side, test predictive maintenance algorithms against live machine data, and confirm interoperability across diverse automation platforms and network protocols.
Each testing and use case development environment mirrors real-world conditions to ensure your solution is fully validated.
Example project types include:
Manufacturing Process Monitoring – Validate the accuracy and resilience of sensors measuring temperature, pressure, vibration, and flow rates on actual manufacturing equipment, and demonstrate reliable data capture for threshold-altering or predictive maintenance applications.
Predictive Maintenance – Validate sensors, algorithms, or complete solutions that detect anomalies in machine power draw, vibration, or acoustic signatures, and predict when maintenance is needed before a failure occurs.
Quality Inspection – Test optical and depth sensors to verify detection accuracy, false-positive rates, and performance stability under varying lighting and motion conditions.
Interoperability Testing – Confirm protocol compliance and seamless integration by testing sensors or applications against multiple IoT devices, robots, cobots, control systems, network access methods, and software platforms.
Tracking Work-in-Progress (WIP) and Inventory Through Production – Capture real-time location of parts, pallets, and containers as they move through production for accurate visibility throughout the WIP process.
Real-Time Spatial Information for a Digital Twin – Collect live location data for people, assets, and mobile equipment to visualize factory conditions, analyze movement patterns, and compare real operations against simulated layouts and workflows.
Mobile Robot Navigation in Low-Visibility or Changing Environments – Test and validate alongside autonomous mobile robots with a continuous, infrastructure-based location reference and onboard sensors to reduce drift and maintain reliable navigation in dusty, low-light, or frequently reconfigured factory spaces.
