CENGN Announces Membership into CNCF

We are pleased to announce that CENGN has joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a non-profit member. CNCF is an organization committed to sustaining and integrating open source technologies and cloud native computing. CENGN helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) overcome commercialization barriers and grow through our leading-edge infrastructure, expertise, and the creation of a globally recognized ecosystem of members and partners. This membership formalizes the collaborations between the two organizations as CENGN’s technology infrastructure utilizes several open source technologies that are managed by CNCF.

CNCF enables the use of cloud computing for organizations across the globe by creating and fostering a community around top-tier open source projects that orchestrate containers as part of a microservices architecture. CNCF has over 280-member organizations and has a community of contributors that advance the development of its projects. Organizations can gain access to tools and the most innovative technologies through CNCF to build better products faster.

CNCF is a great resource for so many companies. Several CENGN members are also members of CNCF such as Cisco, Huawei, Juniper Networks, Nokia. The foundation also has many well-known public cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and end users like Bloomberg, Spotify, and Salesforce. These companies have joined CNCF to take an active role in growing the cloud native ecosystem, acknowledging the numerous benefits of cloud computing. Companies are understanding that Information Communications Technology (ICT) is critical to their business even if they are not in the technology industry. A few of the significant benefits of moving to cloud computing are reduced IT costs, scalability, and data mobility.

This membership offers several benefits for both CENGN and CNCF. For CENGN, this membership furthers our role in thought leadership for cloud native technologies. It also connects CENGN directly to the exceptional ecosystem of organizations and technologies that CNCF has created. For CNCF, CENGN’s membership will allow us to continue our early adoption of open source technologies managed by CNCF projects.

CENGN has worked with and contributed to several CNCF projects such as Kubernetes, Rook, Prometheus, Fluentd, CNI, and Helm. These projects have strengthened the performance of the infrastructure at CENGN, which has resulted in better service offerings that we can provide our clients. By augmenting our infrastructure with the latest open source technology, CENGN can provide a more flexible and high-performing set of services to our Canadian SMEs, as well as the latest technical consulting services to test their technology. We have also been able to provide CNCF with constructive feedback on the features of the technology and how it can be improved by implementing CNCF projects into CENGN’s production environment. This feedback is then used by CNCF and its community to make developments to the technology, so it can better serve organizations.

A great example of CENGN contributions is with the Rook project. Recently, the Rook project graduated to the CNCF’s incubator stage. CENGN was one of the first adopters of this technology as it was used to deploy and manage Ceph for persistent storage on our bare metal Kubernetes deployment. CENGN was a key reference in the Rook project’s push to leave testing and be deemed suitable for operation in a production environment. As one of the first adopters of Rook, CENGN was in a position to provide constructive feedback on its use and performance, which was implemented to improve Rook and justify its advancement as a CNCF project.

By becoming a member of CNCF, CENGN can further augment its adoption of cloud native technologies from the foundation. Integrating tooling from CNCF will expand the infrastructure and technical services CENGN offers furthering innovation of Canadian technology. In addition to utilizing leading-edge technologies as an early adopter, CENGN contributes to the validation of emerging SDN solutions from CNCF, which helps develop the containerization ecosystem and the foundation.

We look forward to further opportunities by formalizing our membership with CNCF and continuing to actively affiliate CENGN with CNCF and its community. Implementing CNCF Projects into the CENGN infrastructure will allow our organization to stay on the leading-edge and improve the service offerings for our SME clientele. For CNCF, we will continue to provide our technical expertise by piloting the production use of CNCF projects and our expertise on how the technology can be improved.
