It’s hard to believe that the Fall term—and 2019—is almost over! As the year comes to a close, CENGN staff are preparing to say goodbye to this term’s students. As the students wind down and finish off their projects, we decided to sit down with them to take a look back at their term.
This term, CENGN hired thirteen of Canada’s brightest students from various schools from across Canada; Carleton University, Dalhousie University, University of Ottawa, University of Victoria and University of Waterloo. These students came on board ready to get hands-on experience with cutting-edge network technology and be immersed in the ICT ecosystem.
CENGN students play a vital role in the company and this term’s cohort was no different. Our students worked with their mentors and managers to master new skills (and hone their existing ones) while helping fulfill CENGN’s mission and vision.
Our students get a second-to-none experience at CENGN. They get the opportunity to not only work with our commercial-grade network testbed, but they have the unique chance to gain exposure to our members and partners ecosystem. Students are given invaluable experience of working closely within their team and with other departments to accomplish their goals.
Each student tackled different tasks, but each contributed to CENGN’s overall goal to increase Canada’s ICT profile. For example, our Cloud Infrastructure Engineering Students were responsible for growing our framework so we could provide our services to more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Canada. They worked on projects like implementing a Contrail Fabric Manager and automating our inventory system, which streamlined our ability to expand our infrastructure and improve our testbed.
“At CENGN, I got to put everything I’ve learned in school to test and work hands-on with technologies I just wouldn’t have had the chance to use otherwise. Through the boot camp, I also learned a lot of new skills that I’ll be taking with me when I go back to school, and later in my career. I really love the collaborative environment, and the feeling that I’m contributing to CENGN’s mission. Helping SMEs makes me excited to come to work every day.”
– Priyanka Hariharan, University of Waterloo
Our Human Resources Administration Specialist Student drove the future of CENGN’s student program by helping administrate the recruitment process. She also contributed to the future of CENGN’s company culture by conducting research and structuring new policies.
Our students who joined our Marketing Team helped promote the successes of our clients, through blogs, videos, and social media. Among helping run events, they aided in the organization of the CENGN Summit, which is our annual event that brings together members of the ICT community to take a look at the future of innovative networking technology.
“At CENGN, I had the chance to collaborate with others, and be self-directed by flexing my creative muscles to create content for the company. Through the videos I created, I helped promote growing Canadian businesses in the technology sector, as well as the benefits of CENGN’s services. One of the best parts of my term was getting to see the material manifestation of my work. For example, it was awesome to see the largest CENGN Summit being positively received by so many attendees because I was an integral part of the digital look and feel of the event. This placement helped me develop my portfolio which will help me further my career. It has also allowed me to take on more responsibilities than previous placements and be more involved with the core functions of the organization.”
– Sidney Roth, University of Waterloo
On the Project Management team, our Project Management student helped manage CENGN’s various projects by designing the objectives and success criteria then communicating them to the rest of CENGN’s teams. They also helped with the integration of various tools, such as our new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, which is essential to growing CENGN’s reach and bringing our services to more Canadians.
Our Cloud Technology Research Students played a key role in the training side of CENGN. They were responsible for researching and learning about leading-edge networking technologies, such as cloud systems, open-source technologies, and software-defined networking. They also created new training material for CENGN’s online training platform, CENGN Academy.
“Working as a Cloud Technology Research Student helped me to bridge the gap between academic curriculum and industry requirements. By providing access to its infrastructure, CENGN helped me to test and practice my otherwise theoretical knowledge about Kubernetes and OpenStack.”
– Anirudh Karanth, University of Victoria
Throughout his term at CENGN, our Accounting Specialist student worked hands-on with our accounting software to perform accounting functions that supported the entire organization, such as closing month-end, handling expense forms and entering bills.
“Learning about the growing Telecom industry, in Ottawa and abroad, as well as how CENGN is contributing to it was very interesting. Also, finally having the opportunity to apply and grow the skills I learned in school was fantastic.”
– Jacob Ramalho, Dalhousie University
Our Solutions Engineering Students helped provide our commercialization services to growing Canadian businesses and accelerate their time to market while bringing about new growth. They spoke with SMEs to understand the business goals and requirements as a part of the CENGN project. The students also provisioned the project space for our project companies and supported them throughout their testing.
One of this term’s Solutions Engineering Students speaks about his experience at CENGN:
– Vinay Venkataramana Chary, Carleton University
Watching the students leave is a bittersweet feeling. Over the past four months, they have been an integral part of CENGN and have made significant contributions to Canadian SMEs. It’s extremely rewarding to see our students put the knowledge and expertise they have learned through their education to good use all while learning new things they can use in the future. Through their placement here, they have learned the skills that will help shape their future careers as industry professionals.
While they have surely learned a lot over this term, we have had the chance to learn and grow from them as well. This term’s students, just like the students before them, brought new ideas, a variety of skill sets and unique approaches to CENGN. We find it important and valuable to emphasize our student program, as it allows us to gain new perspectives.
Our student program is also essential to our mission, as it allows us to enrich Canada’s ICT talent pool by training the students who will be at the forefront of the industry and help increase our country’s ICT profile making us more competitive on the global stage.
We would like to thank all of our Fall 2019 students! We cannot wait to see what you accomplish next!
